Don’t Step Outside The Box, Rip It To Shreds!

Every Thursday evening without fail, I end up at the same joint. In a seemingly average style Denny’s restaurant, when the clock hits 7, something magical happens. Fort Lauderdale’s best speakers meet at the round table (actually a square), and hold an amazing Toastmaster’s meeting.

I joined the club a while back because I too was plagued by the number one fear most Americans face, public speaking.

Fast forward, the meetings have been a tremendous help for my confidence, communication, and leadership skills. Now I’m the V.P of Education, a big step in the opposite direction from the quiet kid who once sat in the far corner.

Building your brand is not passive. It’s raw, frightening, and a lot to do with stepping out of your comfort zone. I can’t begin to have a clue about the problems you’re facing right now, all I know is we all have them, and if you honestly want something new out of today you can’t keep doing the same things you’ve always been doing.

Heather Huhman’s President & Founder of Come Recommended wrote a post for PersonalBrandingBlog on “5 little factors that could affect your personal brand” and her last factor was having no back story. Well, I’m going to add one more factor to her list, and that’s “not creating an interesting story right now.”

Today make it a must to stretch your box, or just get rid of it all together.

I like Seth Godin’s thoughts on the box. I can’t remember what book this is from, maybe Linchpin…

You don’t want to be too far out of the box, just a little outside the edges so that what you’re trying is still familiar and not too shocking.
