The Branding Story: Melissa Cooley
Everyone one of us has a unique story to tell, maybe not as engaging as the one’s we’ve read by our favorite authors, but each significant, full of invaluable lessons, and backbreaking obstacles.
Today I got to interview yet another star under the radar. Born and raised in La Crosse, she’s still a Wisconsin state citizen.
And following the tradition of their famed cheese culture, she’s been helping her clients bring home more cheddar for over 16 years.
One of the nicest down to earth individuals you’ll meet anywhere, Mrs. Melissa Cooley.
What point did it click for you, that you had a passion for helping others find work?
I’ve always had a drive to help others. From 1994 to 2008, I worked in nonprofit management and consulting; what made that part of my career so rewarding was the knowledge that I was maximizing the capacity of agencies to serve their respective populations.
What was it like growing up in your town as a kid?
Pretty generic. Small Midwestern cities aren’t exactly hubs of excitement.
If you could pick one movie that represents what you’re dealing with in life right now, what would it be?
Wow, I’m horrible with movies! How about a song? “Don’t Worry, Be Happy” by Bobby McFerrin
If you could go back in time to your high school years, what is one thing you’d tell yourself?
“You’re going to marry that guy.” My husband is actually someone I have known since I was 14 years old. We ended up bumping into each other about 10 years after graduation and it all clicked!
(My favorite question) Melissa, what is it in this world that completely terrifies you?
My long-standing squeamishness is with bugs. I remember watching the original Creepshow movie when I was a kid, and there was one segment in which a man’s apartment was totally overrun by them. Gave me nightmares for weeks! *shudders*
Job loss being an epidemic in this economy, what advice could you give to people looking for a job right now?
Build and nurture meaningful connections in your network.
People are more likely to give jobs to people they know personally or to those who come recommended by someone they trust.
If a person is just broadcasting without forming some sort of bond, that’s not going to help much. Make a connection that means something, and people will go out of their way to help.
Melissa, thanks for sharing your story. You’re an amazing personality and I know we could look forward to seeing more great things from you.

Hi City,
I did want to clarify one point — while I have been helping people with their resumes and career paths for 16 years, my business (The Job Quest) was established in 2010.
Thanks so much for this opportunity!
That Melissa Cooley sure is one hip gal.

@Jake: You are so kind — thank you! You know the sentiment goes both ways (well, with you being a hip guy, of course)
Melissa is extremely cool
Thanks for the great interview, Melissa.
Melissa truly is an “under the radar star”. I say it is about time for her to shine bright and take center stage, though! Thanks for another great interview, City.
